Asper Investment Management joins the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials

March 8, 2022

Asper Investment Management (‘Asper’) is one of the first investment management firms to join the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (‘PCAF’).

PCAF is a collaboration between financial institutions worldwide to enable harmonized assessments and disclosures of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions financed by loans and investments. With more than 220 financial institutions from six continents, the group is rapidly expanding in North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific. PCAF participants work together to jointly develop the Global GHG Accounting and Reporting Standard for the Financial Industry to measure and disclose the greenhouse gas emissions of their loans and investments. By doing so, PCAF participants take an important step to assess climate-related risks, set targets in line with the Paris Climate Agreement and develop effective strategies to decarbonize our society.

It’s time to accelerate climate action and commit ourselves to net-zero and a transition towards a low-carbon economy. All financial institutions need to play an important role at scaling up investment in climate solutions. Luigi Pettinicchio, CEO of Asper: “Asper’s mission is to ‘Build the New’, focusing on investments in the new power system, urban energy networks and other sustainable infrastructure. Through our large-scale real asset businesses which we built from bottom-up, called platforms, we have already mobilized more than €1.3bn of investment in newly build (‘greenfield’) sustainable energy projects and have avoided over 17 million tonnes of CO2e so far, per IFI guidelines, by substituting fossil fuels with the production of renewable energy. We are committed to working in partnership with our peers in the financial sector to collectively tackle climate change. Through PCAF, we aim to further advance our and the industry’s ability to measure and disclose financed emissions and avoided emissions from climate solutions as we work to achieve our net-zero ambition.”

Financial institutions struggle with assessing and disclosing their impact in terms of GHG accounting for climate solutions, as well as measuring GHG emissions of the full value chain. PCAF provides the sector with a framework and harmonized methodology for GHG accounting that increases transparency and awareness.

“At Asper, we are delighted to join forces with PCAF and its participants in an effort to collectively develop additional guidance on measuring and reporting on climate solutions by differentiating between newly build ‘greenfield’ and already existing ‘brownfield’ projects, and to further investigate reporting on GHG emissions within the full supply chain. Consistent methodologies, together with robust data and transparent reporting are critical to enabling financial institutions like Asper to set targets and track progress as they work towards ambitious net-zero goals. As part of this commitment, Asper will report on the climate impact of its organization and its portfolio companies this year”, said Jiska Klein, Senior Sustainability Manager of Asper.
